Understanding basic criminal law is about prevention, safety, and knowing how to act if you encounter law enforcement. Here are two vital rights every Filipino should know:
1. The Right to Remain Silent
If detained or questioned by the police, you have the right to remain silent (Miranda Rights).
Action: Politely state, "I choose to remain silent until my lawyer is here."
Reminder: Anything you say can be used against you. Do not waive this right without a lawyer present.
2. You Have a Right to Counsel
If you cannot afford a lawyer, the government must provide you with one for free. Never discuss your case without your counsel present.
